LEGISLATIVE UPDATE/POLITICAL NEWS & LINKS
LEGISLATIVE UPDATE
-
SB26- CIVIL ACTIONS: RESTITUTION FOR OR REPLACEMENT OF A NEW MOTOR VEHICLE. Newsom signed into law to correct AB 1755 signed in 2024. SB 26 will require notice to consumers who buy potential lemons. As with so many California Democrat legislative bills, they don’t look at the downstream effects. Newsom stated, “I remain concerned that AB1755 may not have struck the proper balance for all parties. Bottom line, Newsom hopes you won’t have to jump through quite so many hoops if you buy a lemon.

AB1333 – CRIMES – HOMICIDE. This bill is still winding its way through the democrat super majority legislators as of 3/17/25. Basically, the intent is to prevent self-defense similar to self-defense used by Kyle Rittenhouse. The bill states that a homicide is not justifiable when a person was outside their habitation and didn’t retreat when they could have safely done so, it could be ruled a homicide. Who determines whether or not they should defend themselves or retreat? Stupid law written by stupid legislators. Some have said this bill had been withdrawn on March 13; however, it is in the committee process on April 7 (reworked so possibly you can defend yourself from intruders in your house).

-
AB49 – SCHOOL SITES: IMMIGRATION INFORCEMENT. Prohibits ICE or Border Security from entering school grounds.

-
SB222. CLIMATE DISASTERS: CIVIL ACTIONS. States that if you suffer physical harm or property damage of $10,000 or more, you can file a civil suit to recover damages from the party responsible for a climate disaster (oil companies). The bill also states that insurance companies have the right of subrogation against a responsible party for climate disaster (instead of paying claims – it’s the oil companies’ fault). Good to know that California fires are defined as a climate disaster instead of extreme mismanagement of water resources and forest clearing. (Guess who wrote this gem?? Weiner!!) If this passes and oil companies get sued, California will no longer have gas or oil (could be the goal) or we will be paying large increases at the pump and increased electricity bills.

-
AB1468 ETHNIC STUDIES: CONTENT STANDARDS; CURRICULUM FRAMEWORDS; INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIAL; AND COMPLIANCE MONITORING. As many of us know, a law was passed requiring students to complete one semester of designated ethnic studies coursework while in grades 9-12 in order to graduate from high school. This new bill proposes that an advisory committee be formed consisting of experts in African American studies, Asian American and Pacific Islander studies, Native American studies, and Latino and Chicanx studies to provide input to the state board on proposed content standards. This bill would mandate compliance with state requirements and ensure courses foster multicultural respect and focus on the domestic experience and stories of historically marginalized peoples in American society.

-
AB435. VEHICLES: CHILD PASSENGER RESTRAINTS. Teens could be banned from riding in the front seat. Requires all children younger than 10 years old and shorter kids under 13 to sit on a booster. Teens over 13 would be banned from the front seat unless they meet the 4’9” height requirement.

-
AB844 & AB89 – Two bills introduced to Protect Girls’ Sports, banning transgenders from girls’ sports and girls’ locker rooms. The California Democrats killed the bills.
CALIFORNIA UPDATE
-
NEWSOM INVITES INTERNATIONAL TRADING PARTNERS. In defiance of President Trump’s tariffs, Newsom thinks California is a country unto itself. He is urging exemptions from California made products from tariffs. Newsom contends that as the 5th largest economy, that it has been a key player on the international stage. Newsom says he has signed 38 international agreements with 28 different foreign partners previously. Not sure what those agreements would contain, but would assume those agreements are purchase orders for goods? Foreign exchange students?

NEWSOM APPEALS END OF $47 MILLION USDA FUNDING. He states that funding has ended abruptly and inexplicably. BIPOC farmers will suffer, children won’t be fed, and the food banks will not be able to serve insecure communities. This, despite Newsom touting that California is the world’s 5th largest economy.

-
THE WORLD’S LARGEST WILDLIFE CROSSING. “Caltrans and the National Wildlife Federation celebrated the beginning of a project with will cover nearly an acre of the Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing with soil – making it easier for wildlife to move through its habitat" They just completed a 4 year and $92 Million (40% taxpayer funds) bridge over the 101 freeway as the Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing. Your tax dollars at work!! The heck with those hungry children and BIPOC farmers!

CALIFORNIA IS MOVING FORWARD WITH SATELLITE PROJECT TO TRACK METHANE EMISSIONS! Not sure how many cows we still have in California – or how much methane humans are currently creating – but YOU don’t want to be the one showing up on the satellite images! While we moan about the loss of $47 million loss of funding from USDA (to feed the kids), California is spending $100 million on satellites to track methane emissions. Make it make sense.

-
WHY DO WE LOSE CALIFORNIA ELECTIONS? A new report indicated that one fifth of the voters in the 2024 election in Orange County, CA were non-citizens, invalid or phantom voters. (Study from United Sovereign Americans (USA).

-
CALIFORNIA PUBLIC UTILITIES COMMISSION AUDIT. The Auditor, Grant Parks, found that without improving its oversight, the benefits of energy efficiency programs may not be worth their cost to ratepayers. None of the utilities’ program portfolios met their annual goals in at least five of the seven years from 2016 through 2022 and NONE have met electric energy-savings goals since 2019.

CALIFORNIA HIGH GAS PRICES CAUSED BY BAD POLICIES, NOT GREED. While Newsom and Democrat legislators would like you to believe that the soaring prices are caused by the greed of oil companies, shockingly, high gas prices are a result of California’s regulations and poor policies. https://ktla.com/news/california/policies-not-price-gouging-to-blame-for-californias-soaring-gas-prices-study-finds/

NEWSOM & AG BONTA HAVE FILED ANOTHER LAWSUIT AGAINST THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION. Newsom states that the federal government has abruptly and unconstitutionally ceased funding for the state’s libraries. The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS)supports educational and cultural institutions and programs across the country. Through IMLS’s Grants, the California State Library received $15.7 million in federal funding to support statewide library programs and staffing. Though California has received $12.5 million, Newsom is suing for the balance. Have you ever heard of this federal agency? Per the IMLS website, “as a federal agency administering discretionary federal programs, IMLS receives its funding through the annual appropriations process. We are one of several independent agencies whose spending limits each year are established in the Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act.” Newsom & Bonta may have forgotten that the federal government has $37 Trillion in debt. And why are federal dollars going to state libraries?
